Ellis Monk is a Professor of Sociology at Harvard University and a Visiting Faculty Researcher at Google. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. from the University of Michigan. Previously, he taught at the University of Chicago and Princeton University. His research focuses on race/ethnicity in comparative perspective, colorism, health inequities, and the intersection of race and technology, particularly artificial intelligence and medical devices. Notably, he developed the Monk Skin Tone Scale and has pioneered work on skin tone measurement in pulse oximetry and AI fairness.
Monk’s research clusters include Comparative Sociology, Health and Population Inequality, and Race/Ethnicity and Immigration at Harvard. He has been recognized with the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2022-2027) for his work on skin tone and healthcare technology. His recent studies address regulatory standards for medical devices, inclusive AI design, and the social psychology of categorization.
