Elliott Jurist is a Professor of Philosophy and Psychology at The Graduate Center and The City College of New York, CUNY. He served as Director of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program (2004–2013) and has been Editor of Psychoanalytic Psychology since 2008. His research focuses on mentalization, emotional regulation in therapy, ethics, and addictions. He co-developed the Mentalized Affectivity Scale (MAS), a tool measuring emotional identification, modulation, and expression. He has authored/co-authored books like Affect Regulation, Mentalization and the Development of the Self (winner of two book prizes) and edited Mind to Mind: Infant Research, Neuroscience, and Psychoanalysis.

Research interests emphasize the interplay between emotions and agency, with a focus on psychoanalytic theory and practice. His work bridges philosophy, psychology, and clinical research, exploring how emotional understanding shapes identity and behavior. Recent projects include analyzing citation trends in French psychoanalysis and editing special issues on psychoanalysis and the humanities.
Scientific achievements include leading Psychoanalytic Psychology to the highest impact factor among psychoanalytic journals (2017) and receiving the APA Division 39 Scholarship Award (2014). He has also been invited as a keynote speaker at major institutions such as Maimonides Medical Center.
Teaching includes courses like Contemporary Psychoanalytic Theory and Practicum in Supervision and Consultation. His lab group focuses on the MAS and its applications in clinical settings.
