Prof. Ellen Vlaeyen is a tenure-track professor at Hasselt University's Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, where she co-develops the Master of Science in Systems and Process Innovation in Healthcare and the Master of Science in Nursing and Midwifery. She is also affiliated with KU Leuven's Academic Center for Nursing and Midwifery. Her research focuses on geriatric care (fall prevention) and healthcare leadership development. As vice-chair of the Expertise Center for Fall and Fracture Prevention Flanders (EVV), she investigates effective fall prevention measures for older adults in home and residential settings. She coordinates the Network for Leadership Development in Healthcare to address staffing shortages and complex care challenges through improved leadership. Prof. Vlaeyen emphasizes the interdependence of leadership and patient outcomes, advocating for resilient management and team creativity.
Her work highlights that 1 in 3 community-dwelling older adults fall annually, rising to 66% among those with dementia. She collaborates with colleagues to implement preventive strategies and advocates for shared leadership models in elderly care to enhance resilience and patient outcomes.
