Dr. Ellen Rowley is an Assistant Professor in Modern Irish Architecture at the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy, University College Dublin (UCD). She is a leading architectural and cultural historian specializing in 20th-century Irish architecture, with research focusing on Catholic patronage, suburban development, housing histories, architectural obsolescence, and campus planning. Her influential works include the three-volume More Than Concrete Blocks series on Dublin's architectural history and co-editorship of the Art and Architecture of Ireland series (Royal Irish Academy/Yale University Press, 2014).
- Current projects include Evolving Legacies (architecture of the Irish Catholic Church, 1940s) and TOO OLD AND NOT OLD ENOUGH (interdisciplinary cultural project on time, modernism, and value).
- She collaborates across disciplines, co-supervising PhDs on Dublin film/architecture (with Dr. Gul Kacmaz, Queens University) and death/art practices (with KU Leuven/Luca School of Arts, Belgium).
Her research has been widely disseminated through public engagement, including co-creation of Dublin's 14 Henrietta Street tenement museum, curatorship of the Belfield 50 (UCD Communications) and Dublin Art + Architecture Book Fair (2018). Awards include Honorary Membership of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (2017) and Thomas Dammann Junior Memorial Awards for research travel. A passionate educator, she advocates for universal design for learning and widening participation in architectural education through UCD's committee work.
