Ellen Oxfeld is a Professor of Anthropology at Middlebury College, where she has taught since 1985. Her research focuses on Chinese communities, including diasporic populations in India and Canada, and long-term fieldwork in Meixian, Guangdong Province, China. Her work examines moral discourse, gender roles, property relations, and food systems in rapidly changing societies. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University, following undergraduate studies at Williams College. Her courses span cultural anthropology, gender studies, and the anthropology of China and food. Oxfeld emphasizes anthropology’s role in understanding cultural diversity and global interconnectedness. She is currently on academic leave for Spring 2025.
