Ellen Kushner serves as a Visiting Associate Professor in the Children's Literature department at Hollins University, where she teaches in the Children's Literature M.F.A. program. She also teaches creative writing at specialized workshops including Clarion and the Odyssey Workshop.
Her research interests center on literary fantasy, interstitial arts, and the intersection of traditional folklore with contemporary storytelling. As a co-founder of the Interstitial Arts Foundation, she explores creative spaces between genres and disciplines, particularly examining queer narratives and gender dynamics within fantasy literature. Her work bridges academic study with practical creative application through both writing and performance.
Her publications reveal consistent engagement with historical fantasy settings, particularly exploring power structures, gender identity, and social class through sword-and-sorcery narratives. The works show increasing complexity in collaborative storytelling and borderland theory, culminating in shared-universe projects like Bordertown.
Her literary achievements include:
- World Fantasy Award for Thomas the Rhymer
- Mythopoeic Award for Thomas the Rhymer
- Locus Award for The Privilege of the Sword
- Nebula Award nomination for The Privilege of the Sword
- Audie Award for audiobook narration
Kushner has significantly influenced fantasy literature through both her creative works and educational initiatives. Her radio show Sound & Spirit demonstrated her commitment to interdisciplinary artistic exploration, while her teaching focuses on developing new generations of children's and fantasy writers. She maintains an active presence in the literary community through workshops, conventions, and collaborative projects.
Based in New York City with fellow writer Delia Sherman, Kushner continues to contribute to the fantasy genre through writing, teaching, and advocacy for interstitial arts.
