Ellen Kittell is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Idaho, part of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Sciences. Her research and teaching focus on pre-modern Europe, particularly medieval Flanders, with an emphasis on women's history, legal history, and gender inclusivity.

Her research explores the social and legal roles of women in medieval Flanders, examining how women exercised agency in urban governance, economic life, and legal systems. She investigates topics such as gender ideology, guardianship, testamentary practices, and personal identity. Her recent work analyzes financial and judicial records to understand how medieval women identified themselves and claimed autonomy.
The recent publications reflect a strong focus on gender inclusivity, legal language, and women's economic and social agency in medieval urban settings. Her work bridges legal, social, and gender history, often employing comparative methods across cities like Douai and Genoa.
