Ellen Hjort is a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at Aberystwyth University, contributing to the Cymru Wledig LPIP Rural Wales project since 2017. Originally from northern Sweden, she completed her PhD in human geography at Aberystwyth focusing on rural spatial justice through comparative case studies in Wales and Northern Sweden.
Her doctoral research examined how urban norms impact rural community dynamics, sense of power, and future visions. She remains actively affiliated with Aberystwyth University as research staff following her doctoral studies.
Dr. Hjort's research centers on rural political geography with emphasis on spatial justice, peripheralization, and marginalization processes. She investigates identity formation, belonging, race and whiteness dynamics, local power structures, and political movements within rural communities, analyzing how macro-level phenomena manifest in situated contexts.
