Ellen Gerdes is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Dance at Swarthmore College. She holds an EdM in Dance Education from Temple University and a PhD in Culture and Performance from UCLA. Her scholarship examines dance performance/education in Sinophone spaces (Asian America, Taiwan, Hong Kong) through lenses of socio-political ideologies such as Chinese nationalism, British colonialism, and neoliberalism under the "one country, two systems" framework.

Research Interests: Socio-political choreography in Hong Kong, transnational dance pedagogy, cultural identity in performance, interdisciplinary arts education, and Sinophone diasporic practices.
Teaching Experience: Swarthmore College (current), Bucknell University, Drexel University, Rowan University, Temple University, UCLA, and University of North Carolina at Greensboro, spanning studio practice, choreography, and theoretical dance studies.
Performance Collaborations: Collaborated with interdisciplinary artists Merian Soto, Leah Stein, Germaine Ingram, Maria Hassabi, and Ann Carlson. Choreographed for institutions including CHI Movement Arts Center, Koresh Dance Studio, and UCLA's Chinese Cultural Dance Club, with performances across Philadelphia, New York City, San Francisco, Shanghai, and Hong Kong.
