Dr. Ellen Buck-McFadyen is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean at the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing, Trent University. She holds a PhD from McMaster University, an MScN from York University, and a BScN from Queen’s University. Her research focuses on rural health, social determinants of health, homelessness prevention, and substance use in rural contexts. She currently serves as Associate Editor of the North American section of Rural and Remote Health and directs the Trent/Fleming Nursing graduate program.
Her academic journey began with community nursing roles, transitioning to academia in 2008 while completing her graduate studies. Key research projects include evaluating rural emergency shelters, analyzing homelessness dynamics in small towns, and integrating opioid treatment into rural primary care. She has supervised numerous graduate and honours thesis students.
Dr. Buck-McFadyen’s publications span rural health policy, social capital theory, and healthcare innovation. Her work highlights challenges faced by rural populations, emphasizing structural barriers and community-driven solutions. Ongoing projects explore novel approaches to rural homelessness and the impact of virtual training methods in nursing education.
