Ella Hafermalz is an Associate Professor at the School of Business and Economics, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, affiliated with the Knowledge, Information and Innovation department. She joined the KIN research group in 2018. Her PhD in Information Systems and Work and Organisational Studies from the University of Sydney Business School (Australia) and degrees in Teaching, Media and Communications, and Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne form her academic foundation. Her research explores how technologies like Generative AI transform work practices, with a focus on hybrid and remote work. She has contributed to over 29 peer-reviewed publications and actively participates in editorial roles, such as Associate Editor for the European Journal of Information Systems.
Ella’s research interests bridge theory and practice, leveraging philosophy and social theory to analyze technology’s role in work. Key areas include AI’s impact on knowledge work, biometric data management, and hybrid work policies. She has received awards including the ACPHIS medal (2017) and the Best Young Education Award (2020). Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Technology (General).
She co-led the project How can hybrid working 'work' at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam? (2022–2024), exploring university policies and hybrid work culture. Her teaching includes the course Digital Innovation: New Ways of Organizing and Working. Ella’s datasets, such as AIKNOW, reflect her commitment to advancing AI and data science research.
