Elizabeth Weiser

Elizabeth Weiser is a Professor of English at The Ohio State University with a focus on Rhetoric and Writing Studies. She holds a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition from Texas Christian University and has served on the Newark campus since 2004. Weiser is recognized as an Arts & Sciences Distinguished Professor and is a leading Burkean rhetorical theorist and narrative museologist.

Weiser’s research explores the intersection of identification and division in civic life, with a focus on museum rhetoric and cultural nationalism. Her current project Rhetorics of Repair analyzes reconciliation practices in U.S. museums, while her 2017 book Museum Rhetoric examines national identity formation across 60 museums in 22 countries. She also contributes to the global museum studies discourse as Editor-in-Chief of the ICOFOM Study Series, the oldest peer-reviewed journal in museology.

Her publication trends reveal expertise in rhetorical theory, museology, and interdisciplinary cultural analysis, with works spanning from Dorothy Day’s activism to the Newark Earthworks and global technology museums.

At OSU, Weiser teaches Rhetorical Studies and Writing, served as 2022-23 DEI Fellow and P&T Chair, and leads the International Committee for Museology as its only American executive board member. She balances academic work with writing novels (notably Lumen), musical pursuits (tin whistle & piano), and outdoor activities.
