Elizabeth Van Couvering is an Assistant Professor of Media and Communication Studies at Karlstad University, Sweden. She holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science, an MBA from the Open University, and a BA in Cultural Anthropology from Bryn Mawr College. Her research focuses on the political economy of digital platforms, search engines, algorithmic gatekeeping, and gig economy labor dynamics. She also explores data visualization and climate communication.
Teaching responsibilities include media theory, strategic communications, science and technology studies, and data visualization courses. Current research projects include 'Algorithms and media organisations' and 'SWEGIG' (job intermediary platforms in Sweden). Her work draws from over three decades of industry experience in digital media, including roles at early internet companies like Cyberia, Easynet, and Webmedia.
