Prof. Elizabeth Tilley is an Associate Professor at ETH Zürich's Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering and Deputy Head of the Institute of Design, Materials and Fabrication. She holds a PhD in Economics from ETH Zurich and has extensive experience in sanitation, water, and solid waste systems in low-resource settings. Her work bridges engineering, economics, and public health, focusing on sustainable urban services in the Global South. She has led projects in Malawi, Nepal, and Central America, emphasizing equitable technologies and policy interventions.
Key research areas include solid waste management impacts on public health, air quality, and sanitation systems. She co-founded the Global Health Engineering chair at ETH, integrating technical and social dimensions of development challenges. Prof. Tilley also serves as an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Victoria, Canada. She is an Associate Editor for Water SA and the Journal of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene for Development.
Her recent work highlights interdisciplinary approaches to waste governance, including studies on open burning's health impacts, low-cost waste treatment technologies, and migrant integration in urban waste practices. She collaborates with institutions like Eawag and Sandec, emphasizing participatory design in resource-constrained environments.
