Elizabeth Thorpe is an Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of Communication at SUNY Brockport. She holds a B.A. in English from Baylor University, an M.A. in English from Texas A&M University, and a PhD in Communication (Rhetoric and Public Affairs) from Texas A&M University. Her research focuses on constitutive rhetoric, legal rhetoric, free speech, and political rhetoric, with a particular emphasis on the construction of national identity and protest movements.
Before joining SUNY Brockport, she served as a Visiting Assistant Professor there from Fall 2010 to Spring 2012. Earlier roles include teaching and research positions at Texas A&M University, including Instructor in the Communication and English departments, and a Grader/TA in Film Studies. She has also held academic roles at Baylor University.
Thorpe is deeply committed to teaching, having instructed courses such as 'Protest and Social Change,' 'Argumentation and Debate,' 'Political Rhetoric,' and 'Rhetorical Criticism.' She actively engages with professional organizations like the Rhetorical Society of America and the National Communication Association.
