Elizabeth Meiering is a Full Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Her research focuses on understanding protein folding, dynamics, function, engineering, and design, with applications in biotechnology and medical science. She holds a BSc in Honours Chemistry from the University of Waterloo (1988), a PhD in Biological Chemistry from the University of Cambridge (1992), and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School (1992–1996).
Her work integrates experimental techniques (e.g., NMR spectroscopy, calorimetry, and molecular dynamics) with computational modeling to study proteins like Hisactophilin, ThreeFoil, Adnectins, and ALS-linked SOD1. Key projects include investigating pH-dependent actin/membrane binding, designing multivalent carbohydrate-binding proteins, enhancing protein biologic stability, and studying SOD1 misfolding in ALS.
Dr. Meiering has received the John Charles Polanyi Award and a University Research Chair. She actively serves on editorial and advisory boards, including the Protein Engineering Design and Selection journal and the ALS Society of Canada. She has held roles such as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at Waterloo and chaired the Proteins Gordon Research Conference.
Her lab, the Protein Folding Laboratory, explores protein behavior in health and disease, emphasizing translational applications in biotechnology and medicine. Recent publications highlight advancements in structural analysis, aggregation mechanisms, and computational modeling of protein stability.
