Elizabeth Mearls is a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research examines bacterial stress responses, focusing on sporulation mechanisms in Bacillus subtilis and pathogenic Clostridium difficile. Investigations center on metabolic shifts during sporulation, intercellular communication through channel structures, and gene expression regulation during developmental transitions.
Key research areas include:
- Metabolic coordination during asymmetric cell division in sporulation
- Role of membrane channels in mother cell-forespore communication
- Genetic tuning of developmental gene expression switches
Dr. Mearls holds a PhD from Dartmouth College and completed postdoctoral training at Mount Holyoke College. Her work employs genetic, transcriptomic, and biochemical approaches to understand bacterial adaptation strategies.
