Elizabeth L. Thom is a College Fellow and incoming Assistant Professor of Political Science at Northwestern University, with a joint appointment in the Program for Environmental Policy and Culture. She is also a Faculty Fellow at Northwestern's Institute for Policy Research.
Education:
- PhD in Government & Social Policy from Harvard University
- MSc in Comparative Social Policy from the University of Oxford
- BA in Political Science and Hispanic Studies from the University of Pennsylvania
Her research focuses on American politics, social policy, and political economy. She examines how policy responses to extractive industry decline in Appalachia affect local communities and political behavior, and contributes to energy transition strategies through affiliations with Harvard's Salata Institute and MIT's Roosevelt Project.
Scientific Awards:

- Malcolm Wiener Scholar in Poverty and Justice at Harvard Kennedy School
- Thouron Scholar at the University of Oxford
Prior to her academic career, she worked at the Brookings Institution with E.J. Dionne, Jr. She enjoys running, cooking, soccer, and supporting Philadelphia sports teams.
