Kaneesha Johnson

Kaneesha Johnson is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Carolina Postdoctoral Program for Faculty Diversity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She will be joining the Department of Political Science as an incoming Assistant Professor. Her research focuses on the intersection of public policy, the criminal legal system, and historical institutionalism within American politics, examining how punitive systems function as mechanisms of social control and local responses to such structures.

Research Interests: Johnson’s work explores systemic punishment designs, legal-political dynamics, institutional memory, and marginalized communities’ resistance strategies. She employs historical and qualitative methodologies to analyze policy frameworks and their societal impacts. Her book project, recognized by Harvard’s Toppan Prize, critically evaluates punitive systems as tools of social control in American governance.
