معرفی
Elizabeth Walsh is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), College of Science, where she also serves as Associate Dean of the College of Science and Associate Director of the Center for Environmental Resource Management (CERM). Her academic roles span Bioinformatics, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Environmental Science disciplines.
Her research focuses on evolutionary ecology of freshwater invertebrates in arid environments, with core projects examining:
- Adaptation mechanisms of Chihuahuan Desert zooplankton in temporary habitats
- Comparative genomics and molecular phylogenetics in rotifers
- Life history evolution and diapause regulation cues
- Environmental toxicology impacts of heavy metals and pharmaceuticals on rotifers
- Population genetics of tardigrades in dryland ecosystems
Analysis of her 2023-2025 publications reveals dominant themes in rotifer taxonomy, wind-mediated dispersal mechanisms, and genomic responses to desert conditions. Her work consistently integrates microscopy, genomics, and field ecology to address challenges in temporary aquatic habitats, with increasing emphasis on African biodiversity assessments and climate change impacts on diapause.
Dr. Walsh leads major grant-funded initiatives including:
- UTEP RISE Program: NIH-funded research training for biomedical careers
- STEMGrow Program: $6.4 million NIH initiative for undergraduate research development
- RaMP (ROADs): Research access in extreme dryland environments
These programs implement experiential learning and stratified mentoring models proven to enhance STEM recruitment and retention at this Hispanic-serving institution. She actively mentors undergraduate researchers featured in symposia like the Summer COURI event.
Her laboratory conducts field investigations of desert springs across North America and Africa, with recent discoveries including wind dispersal mechanisms of microinvertebrates. The lab maintains external collaborations mapped through institutional resources and specializes in integrative studies of rotifer and tardigrade adaptation.
