Elizabeth Hénaff is an Assistant Professor at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, affiliated with the Technology, Culture and Society Department and the Center for Urban Science + Progress (CUSP). She holds a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of Barcelona, an M.A. in Plant Biology from the University of Texas at Austin, and a B.S. in Computer Science from the same institution. Her research focuses on the intersection of living organisms and their environments, spanning microbiology, bioinformatics, and urban design.
Key affiliations include NYU Tandon School of Engineering, CUSP, and previous postdoctoral roles at institutions like the Center for Genomic Regulation (Barcelona) and Weill Cornell Medical College. She has exhibited work at venues such as the Venice Architecture Biennale and the Brooklyn galleries, blending scientific inquiry with artistic practice.
Her research explores microbial communities' roles in bioremediation, urban microbiomes, and transposable elements. Notable projects include the GENE ZINE initiative, the Subculture exhibition, and collaborations on the Pathomap project analyzing the NYC subway microbiome. She also develops tools for microbial monitoring and citizen science, such as DNA detection devices and DIY bioreactors.
Hénaff’s work bridges art, science, and technology, addressing themes like urban resilience, multispecies collaboration, and environmental sustainability. Her labs, including the Laboratory for Living Interfaces, investigate organism-environment interactions with interdisciplinary approaches.
