Elizabeth Hoult

Dr. Elizabeth Hoult is a Professor of Education at Northumbria University, appointed in 2020. Previously, she held roles at Birkbeck, University of London, and Canterbury Christ Church University, including leadership in education programs and research projects such as the £3m South East Coastal Communities initiative. She holds a PhD in Education (2010), MA (2000), PGCE (1993), and BA in English Literature (1992).

Her research focuses on resilience in marginalized learners, literary theory’s application to social research, and the civic university’s role in supporting disadvantaged communities. Key areas include prison education, looked-after children, and adult learning’s transformative potential. She has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship (2004) and the BERA Best Doctoral Thesis Prize (2010).

Dr. Hoult supervises numerous PhD students, including recent completions and ongoing projects. Her work bridges teaching, research, and knowledge exchange, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods like poetry and science fiction to explore educational challenges. Current projects include a monograph on foster children’s educational experiences.
