Elizabeth Holm is the Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering and Department Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Michigan.
Her educational background:
- Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and Scientific Computing (Dual), University of Michigan
- S.M. in Ceramics, MIT
Professor Holm's research focuses on Computational Materials Science, with particular emphasis on microstructural evolution in complex polycrystals, mechanical properties of materials, and the application of data science techniques such as machine learning and machine vision to materials problems. Her work spans multiple scales from atomic to continuum, integrating molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo simulations, phase field modeling, and finite element analysis to address challenges in polycrystal behavior and nanomaterial properties.
She has received numerous honors including:
- National Academy of Engineering Member (2025)
- ASEE Mike Ashby Outstanding Materials Educator Award (2022)
- AIME Honorary Member (2022)
- ASM Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial Lecturer (2021)
- TMS Alexander Scott Distinguished Service Award (2020)
- Fellow of the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society (2019)
- Fellow of ASM International (2002)
- Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories (2002)
Professor Holm previously served as Professor at Carnegie Mellon University (2012-2022) and Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories (1992-2012). Information regarding her student advising and research grants is not provided in the given text.
