Dr. Elizabeth Hegedus is a Lecturer in the School of Medical Sciences (Education Innovation) at the University of Sydney. She holds a BSc (Hons I) and PhD from the University of New South Wales. Her research focuses on medical education, particularly student transition to university, anatomy learning strategies, and electronic feedback systems. She transitioned from antimicrobial resistance research (2015) to education, earning a UK FHEA in 2019.
Research interests include scaffolding first-year students as problem-solvers, anatomical language acquisition, and spatial understanding of 3D anatomy. She also investigates electronic feedback efficacy and teratogen effects on fetal development via collaborations with MotherSafe. Teaching areas include visceral anatomy, immunology, and emerging infectious diseases.
Recent projects include UVULA anatomy workshops, team-based neuroanatomy teaching, and studies on assessment time limits' impact on student stress. She co-leads proposals to develop radiograph simulation tools and evaluate post-COVID feedback perceptions.
- Awards: Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), UK (2019)
- Associations: Australian and New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists (ANZACA), Australian Birth Defects Society (Secretary), Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM)
- Grants: 2000 Investigation of antibiotic resistance in enteric microbiota (University of Sydney grant)
Her interdisciplinary work bridges medical education and biomedical research, with grants and collaborations spanning anatomy education to reproductive health.
