Elizabeth Hartland is a Professor and Head of the Department of Molecular and Translational Science at Monash University, and Director & CEO of Hudson Institute of Medical Research. She holds a B.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Melbourne.
Her research focuses on bacterial pathogenesis, particularly mechanisms of immune evasion by Gram-negative pathogens like Legionella and Burkholderia. She investigates effector proteins in pathogens such as E. coli, Shigella, and Salmonella, and explores interactions between the microbiome, pathogens, and innate immunity using iPSC-derived tissue models.
Recent projects include studying Legionella detection kits, high-precision mass spectrometry imaging, and precision microbiology strategies. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing health and innovation.
Under her supervision, 19 PhD students have completed, with notable achievements including NHMRC and ARC Fellowships. Notable collaborations span institutions in Australia and Malaysia.
