Dr Elizabeth Ewart is an Associate Professor in the Anthropology of Lowland South America at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography. She is a Fellow of Linacre College and serves as Director of Graduate Studies. From 2018 to 2021, she was Head of the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography. Her research focuses on indigenous communities in Central Brazil, particularly the Panará people, exploring themes such as material culture, body arts, and everyday practices.
Dr Ewart earned her PhD in Anthropology from the London School of Economics (2000). Her work examines Amerindian cosmology, sensory perception, and the social dimensions of practices like beadwork, gardening, and village design. She has published on topics such as Panará concepts of self and other, and the anthropology of beauty in indigenous contexts.
Her current doctoral advisees include Clara Fortes Brandao, Beatriz Mutter Quinderé Fraga, Andrés González Dinamarca, and Susana Kolb Cadwell. While no scientific awards are explicitly listed, her contributions to South American ethnography are recognized through her extensive fieldwork and academic leadership roles.
