Dr. Elizabeth Chloe Romanis is an Associate Professor in Biolaw at Durham Law School, Durham University. She also serves as an Associate Professor in Durham CELLS (Centre for Ethics and Law in the Life Sciences) and as a Fellow of the Institute for Medical Humanities. From August 2024, she holds the position of Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Law School. She recently completed a Fellowship-in-Residence at Harvard University's Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Ethics and the Petrie-Flom Center for Health Law Policy, Biotechnology and Bioethics, and is an adjunct researcher in the University of Zurich's Human Reproduction Reloaded research programme.
Dr. Romanis received her academic training at the University of Manchester:

- PhD in Bioethics and Medical Jurisprudence (Wellcome Trust-funded, passed with no corrections)
Dr. Romanis specializes in healthcare law and bioethics with a focus on reproduction and the body. Her research spans abortion, gestation, pregnancy, and birth, with particular expertise in artificial womb technology. She employs feminist legal perspectives to examine how law intersects with reproductive technologies and bodily autonomy. Her work often addresses issues of gender, equality, and justice in reproductive healthcare contexts, increasingly incorporating nonbinary and transgender pregnancy experiences.
Dr. Romanis's recent publications show a strong focus on emerging reproductive technologies, particularly artificial womb technology and its legal implications. She has extensively examined telemedical abortion services, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her work increasingly addresses nonbinary and transgender pregnancy experiences, reflecting evolving understandings of gender and reproduction in law. She has published in leading journals including the Modern Law Review, Medical Law Review, Journal of Law and the Biosciences, and the Journal of Medical Ethics.
Dr. Romanis has received several prestigious awards:

As co-Editor-in-Chief of Medical Law International, Dr. Romanis plays a significant role in shaping scholarly discourse in medical law. She actively mentors PhD students in reproduction and the law, and has secured research funding including a Wellcome Trust fellowship for her doctoral work. Her current research projects include work on biotechnology, gestation, and the law, supported by fellowships from Harvard University and the Future of Human Reproduction project. She has published two books: 'Early Medical Abortion, Equality of Access, and the Telemedical Imperative' (Oxford University Press, 2021) and 'Biotechnology, Gestation, and the Law' (Oxford University Press, 2025).
Dr. Romanis is an active member of several research communities, including the University of Zurich's Human Reproduction Reloaded research programme. She collaborates with scholars across disciplines on reproductive ethics and law, contributing to a growing interdisciplinary field that bridges legal scholarship, bioethics, and clinical practice. Her teaching includes Advanced Issues in Criminal Law, Contemporary Issues in Biolaw, Contemporary Issues in Medical Law and Ethics, and Law and Social Justice.
