Elizabeth Chant is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Sustainable Development at the University of Warwick, affiliated with the School for Cross-Faculty Studies. She serves as Study Abroad Co-ordinator and Library Liaison. Her educational background includes a PhD in Spanish and Latin American Studies from University College London, an MPhil from the University of Cambridge, and a BA from the University of Durham. She holds recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Her research employs interdisciplinary approaches spanning environmental humanities, Latin American cultural studies, and visual analysis. Primary interests include the construction of 'nature' in the Americas through historical cartography, tourism ephemera, and environmental narratives—particularly focused on Patagonia (Argentina/Chile) from the 18th to 20th centuries. Current book projects examine Patagonian cultural representations and dark tourism ecologies in American industrial frontiers.
Publications demonstrate consistent themes: Latin American environmental history analyzed through maps, tourism materials, and literary texts. Recent works explore Antarctic literary nationalism, Patagonian cartography, and nature commodification in Juan Fernández Islands, reflecting methodologies bridging historical geography, ecocriticism, and visual studies.
Research recognition includes support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council and fellowships at:
- Newberry Library
- Huntington Library
- Library of Congress
She coordinates international partnerships for student mobility and contributes as trustee of the International Society for the History of the Map (ISHMap).
