Elizabeth Alsop is an Assistant Professor and Academic Director of the Communication and Media Program at CUNY School of Professional Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the CUNY Graduate Center with a Film Studies certificate. Her career includes roles at Queens College, Hunter College, and the Graduate Center’s Teaching and Learning Center, where she contributed to the Mellon-funded CUNY Humanities Alliance grant. Her research bridges 20th-century literature, film, and television studies, focusing on narrative theory, feminist authorship, and genre evolution.
Alsop’s work appears in Journal of Film and Video, Velvet Light Trap, and Bookforum, alongside her forthcoming book on modernist dialogue. Her recent publications analyze Elaine May’s filmography, Susan Seidelman’s television work, and men-optional worldbuilding in cinema. She explores intersections of genre, gender, and authorship through projects like a chapter in ReFocus: The Films of Susan Seidelman (2023) and her 2025 monograph on Elaine May.
Her grants include leadership in humanities equity initiatives, and she advises on academic programs blending media studies with contemporary cultural critique. Labs/teams include collaborations through CUNY’s humanities networks and innovative learning platforms.
