Dr Elizabeth Allen is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the School of Biosciences and Chemistry and the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre. She holds a BSc in Biochemistry from Bath University and a PhD in Virology from Glasgow University. Her career spans postdoctoral research, pharmaceutical industry work, NHS clinical genetics roles, and academic teaching/research. She teaches on multiple biomedical science programs (BSc/MSci Biomedical Science, MSc Pharmacology, etc.) and leads modules in genetics and drug discovery. Dr Allen’s research focuses on rare genetic diseases, genetic variant interpretation, and the unfolded protein response (UPR)/integrated stress response (ISR) in neurological disorders and cancer. Her work includes studying mutations linked to Vanishing White Matter Disease and collaborations with institutions like the Institute of Cancer Research. Funding sources include the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre and NHS charities. She has supervised doctoral students including M.Ribeiro de Oliveira (2023) and collaborates with experts such as Dr Susan Campbell. Her research identifies novel therapeutic strategies targeting eIF2B signaling and stress granules, with implications for cancer treatment and genetic diagnostics.
