Elizabeth A. Bates is an Associate Professor of Family Violence and Abuse and Principal Lecturer in Psychology and Psychological Therapies at the University of Cumbria. She joined the institution in 2011 as a Lecturer in Psychology and has since held progressive roles, including Senior Lecturer. Her research focuses on domestic violence and aggression, particularly male victim experiences, psychological abuse, and the impact of abuse on fathers and children. She co-edits the journal Partner Abuse, serves as a trustee for the ManKind Initiative, and holds editorial roles in multiple academic journals.
Her qualifications include a PhD in Psychology (2012) from the University of Central Lancashire, specializing in partner violence and psychopathology. She holds Chartered Scientist status and is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Her pedagogic research explores student transition to higher education and employability.
Recent work includes studies on post-separation experiences of male victims, GBT men’s domestic violence experiences, and South Asian men’s abuse encounters. She supervises PhD students in topics ranging from gender stereotypes in IPV to child-to-parent violence. Over 30 peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes highlight her contributions to domestic violence discourse, including co-editing Domestic Violence against men and boys (2022) and Children and Adolescents’ Experiences of Violence and Abuse at Home (in press).
