Elise Franklin is an Assistant Professor of European History at the University of Louisville (UofL), holding the Jamie & Thelma Guilbeau/BORSF Endowed Professorship in History. She previously served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Her research focuses on colonialism, decolonization, gender history, and the welfare state in France, particularly examining Algerian migration and postcolonial policies. Franklin earned her PhD in History from Boston College (2017) and a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University.
Her first book, *Disintegrating Empire*, reinterprets French decolonization through the lens of welfare state policies and Algerian family migration. Current projects include a microhistory on the Perrou affair (child adoptions during the Algerian War) and a study on French family planning. She has received grants from the American Philosophical Society, Social Science Research Council, and others.

- Teaching: Offers courses on European empires, gender history, and modern French society, including a new class on historical scandals (Fall 2024).
Franklin’s work bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on migration, citizenship, and colonial legacies. As a Bingham Faculty Fellow, she advanced interdisciplinary humanities research.
