McKetta’s research and teaching focus on the intersections between fairy tales and life writing, particularly how mythological structures can help memoirists navigate personal narratives. Her work explores themes like motherhood, resilience, and the symbiosis of myth and autobiography. Recent publications include Edit Your Life (2023), Awake with Asashoryu (2022), and her novel She Never Told Me About the Ocean (2021), which draws on Greek mythology and personal family lore.
Her 2021 anthology What Doesn’t Kill Her co-edited with Kerry Garvin highlights women’s resilience through collaborative storytelling. McKetta’s writing is informed by her experiences, including raising her family in a tiny house (discussed in a 2019 TEDx talk) and her ongoing projects like a middle-grade novel in verse titled Ark and Rose Child, White Nights, an adaptation of The Thousand and One Nights.
Notable awards include the James E. Conway Excellence in Teaching Writing Award (2018). She co-founded the feminist publishing collective Harridan and Strumpet Books and actively mentors writers through her Book Year Writer’s Circle.
