Elisabeth Kvernen is an Assistant Professor in the School of Media Arts and Design at James Madison University (JMU), where she has served since 2020. She holds an M.F.A. in Integrated Design from the University of Baltimore (2009) and a B.A. from Wheaton College. Her work bridges graphic design, cultural exploration, and community engagement through visual storytelling.

Her research focuses on themes of culture, place, and identity within visual communication design, with particular attention to design traditions and artifacts in underrepresented communities. She has led impactful collaborative projects like CalligraphyQalam.com and the multimedia exhibit Here + There, which earned multiple awards.
