Elisa Vilhunen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Helsinki, affiliated with the Department of Education within the Faculty of Educational Sciences, and a member of the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science. Her research focuses on educational sciences, particularly exploring how instructional activities and emotional dynamics influence student engagement in STEM fields. She investigates topics such as climate change competence development, epistemic emotions in science learning, and the design of effective learning modules.
Her work includes projects funded by the Research Council of Finland and the EU Horizon 2020 program, such as 'Climate Change Competencies of the Youth' and 'Addressing Attractiveness of Science Career Awareness.' She actively participates in international conferences like ECER, EERA, and NARST, and organizes events like the 'Emerging Scholars in Educational and Learning Sciences' symposium.
Key research themes include the interplay between student emotions and learning outcomes, the role of mistakes in laboratory settings, and the development of online climate education strategies. She co-leads initiatives to enhance public climate literacy and has contributed to policy recommendations for sustainability education through the ClimComp project.
Dr. Vilhunen also engages in teacher education innovation, utilizing digital tools for lesson observation and promoting scientific entrepreneurship through AI applications like ChatGPT.
