Elisa Mantelli

Prof. Elisa Mantelli is a Professor of Glaciology at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München. She holds affiliations as a Guest Scientist at the Alfred Wegener Institute’s Glaciology Section in Bremerhaven and a courtesy appointment at the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Sciences. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Tasmania (2021–2023), a Fellow at Princeton University’s AOS program and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Lab (2019–2021), and conducted postdoctoral research at Stanford University (2017–2019) and the University of British Columbia (2016). She earned her PhD in Environmental Engineering from Politecnico di Torino (Italy, 2016).

Research Interests: Elisa’s work focuses on glaciology, geophysics, and climate science, with an emphasis on theoretical and numerical modeling of ice dynamics, glacier geophysics, and polar environmental systems. Her research integrates field observations, remote sensing, and computational simulations to address challenges in climate change impacts and glacial processes.

Advising & Opportunities: She leads the LMU Glaciology Research Group and actively recruits BSc/MSc students, PhD candidates, and postdocs. Current openings include a 2-year postdoc position in Glacier Geophysics (application deadline Aug. 13, 2023) and a fully funded PhD position in Theoretical/Numerical Glaciology under the ERC project PHAST.
