Dr. Elisa Fuentes-Montemayor is a Senior Lecturer in Applied Ecology at the University of Stirling, specializing in Nature-based Solutions within the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Her academic career at Stirling spans over a decade, progressing from Postdoctoral Research Assistant to her current senior position.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Ecology from University of Stirling (2007-2011)
- MSc in Environmental Biology from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (2004-2007)
- BSc (Hons) in Biology, major in Ecology from Universidad de las Americas, Mexico (1999-2003)
Dr. Fuentes-Montemayor's research focuses on applied ecology and conservation biology, with particular emphasis on:
- Finding effective ways to restore biodiversity in human-modified landscapes
- Assessing the long-term ecological consequences of woodland creation
- Evaluating conservation actions like habitat restoration and agri-environment schemes
- Understanding landscape ecology and how composition and configuration affect biodiversity
- Studying animal ecology and conservation, particularly of bats, small non-volant mammals and invertebrates
Her research portfolio shows a clear evolution from traditional ecological studies to increasingly transdisciplinary approaches that integrate social and ecological perspectives on nature-based solutions. She has developed significant expertise in woodland ecology and restoration through long-term projects like WrEN.
Her notable scientific recognition includes:
- Vincent Weir Scientific Award 2011 for making a significant contribution to research on the conservation biology of bats
Dr. Fuentes-Montemayor actively contributes to conservation efforts as a Trustee of Bats without Borders and serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Ecology. She currently leads the TreE_PlaNat project which investigates stakeholder perceptions and socio-ecological consequences of woodland expansion through various approaches including planting and natural colonization.
