Elio Brancaforte is Associate Professor of German specializing in early modern cultural exchange. PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University. Research examines European representations of Safavid Iran/Azerbaijan through travel accounts, mapping, and visual culture, informed by theories of representation, book history, and cartography.
Authored Visions of Persia: Mapping the Travels of Adam Olearius (2003) and translated Sperone Speroni's Canace (2013). Co-curated Harvard exhibitions: 'From Rhubarb to Rubies' (2008) and 'The Lands of the Sophi' (2008). Current project: Europe Discovers Iran and Azerbaijan: Dutch and German Representations of the Safavid Empire.
Fellowships include Fulbright (Baku teaching 2015), NEH Seminar, and ACLS Collaborative Research Fellowship (2019-2021) for The Epistemology of the Copy in Early Modern Travel Narratives. Teaches German language/culture courses and fairy tale studies.
