Dr. Elinor Breman is a researcher specializing in tropical rainforest ecology and palaeoecology. She earned her D.Phil. from the School of Geography and Environment at the University of Oxford in 2010, focusing on climate-fire-vegetation dynamics in South African savannas. Her academic journey also includes an MSc in Forestry and Land Use from Oxford and an MA in Plant Sciences from Cambridge.
- Education: D.Phil. (Oxford), MSc (Oxford), MA (Cambridge)
Elinor’s research bridges palaeoecology and modern conservation, examining ecological thresholds in grasslands and savannas over millennia. Her work integrates pollen, charcoal, and phytolith analysis to reconstruct Holocene-era vegetation changes, with a focus on C3/C4 grass ecosystems and fire-climate interactions. She has contributed to studies on seed banks, pine plantation regeneration, and disturbance regimes in Central African rainforests.
Scientific contributions include fieldwork in Costa Rica, Madagascar, and Nicaragua, alongside collaborative projects on ecological resilience. Her publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding long-term environmental change.
- Key Awards:Andrew Mellon Foundation Funding
Elinor’s grants and projects underscore her commitment to addressing ecological challenges through historical data, influencing restoration strategies in fragmented ecosystems globally.
