Elin Lindehoff is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer in Marine Ecology at Linnaeus University's Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, Department of Biology and Environmental Science. She serves as course coordinator for Marine Ecology and Botany and program coordinator for the Master's programme in Aquatic Ecology. Her work focuses on the critical intersection of marine ecology, climate change impacts, and sustainable solutions using microalgae.
Dr. Lindehoff's research centers on microalgae (phytoplankton) in the Baltic Sea ecosystem. She investigates how climate change and eutrophication affect these microscopic organisms that form the base of aquatic food webs. Her work also explores how microalgae can function as biological filters to recycle carbon dioxide from flue gas and nutrients from wastewater, contributing to sustainable environmental solutions. She studies microalgal roles in the nitrogen cycle and their contribution to harmful algal blooms, with particular interest in thiamin (vitamin B1) transfer through aquatic food webs.
Her extensive publication record demonstrates consistent focus on microalgal ecology, biogeochemical cycles, and applied environmental solutions. Recent work emphasizes long-term microalgal cultivation for carbon capture, nutrient recycling from industrial and agricultural waste streams, and understanding microalgal responses to environmental stressors. Her research bridges fundamental ecology with practical applications for environmental remediation, particularly through the Algoland project which develops sustainable solutions using microalgae.
Dr. Lindehoff actively supervises bachelor's and master's students and leads multiple research projects including Algoland (focusing on air and water purification using microalgae), studies on carbon flows in coastal ecosystems affected by climate change, and the Arctic expedition Synoptic Arctic Survey. She is a key member of several research groups including Algoland, Food Web Ecology, and the Linnaeus University Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial model Systems.
