Elijah Gowin serves as Professor and Chair of Studio Art in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where he has taught since 2002 while also acting as Co-Media, Art and Design Faculty Mentor. His practice bridges chemical and digital photography through experimental methodologies rooted in surrealist traditions.
His educational background includes:
- M.F.A. from University of New Mexico, Albuquerque
- B.A. from Davidson College, Davidson, North Carolina
Gowin's work investigates landscape and human experience during spiritual/physical transitions using hybrid techniques that merge hand-crafted alternative processes with digital imaging. Drawing from Southeastern U.S. family roots, folk art traditions, and Flannery O'Connor's literary influence, his practice challenges conventional boundaries between analog and digital media while exploring memory and cultural identity.
His monograph "Of Falling and Floating" (2011) and major exhibitions like "A Shared Elegy" (2020) and "PGI 40th" (2019) demonstrate consistent thematic exploration of transitional states through layered visual narratives. His distinctive approach combines historical photographic processes with contemporary digital interventions to create dreamlike landscapes that interrogate perception and reality.
His major recognitions include:
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2008)
- Charlotte Street Foundation award (2006)
Gowin founded Tin Roof Press in 2008 to advance art publishing entrepreneurship, and maintains representation through New York's Robert Mann Gallery. His mentorship extends through UMKC's Studio Art program where he guides students in experimental photographic techniques despite no specific advisees being documented in source materials.
His creative ecosystem operates through Tin Roof Press as a publishing laboratory and collaborative hub, complemented by gallery partnerships that facilitate international exhibition opportunities and cross-disciplinary artistic dialogues.
