Elias Fattal is a Professor and researcher at the Institut Galien Paris-Saclay (IGPS) within Paris-Saclay University, serving as Vice Dean of Research at the Faculty of Pharmacy and having directed IGPS from 2010 to 2019. With 40 years dedicated to nanomedicine, his work focuses on nanoparticle design for targeted drug delivery in inflammatory diseases and pulmonary applications.
His academic journey includes:
- Scientific Baccalaureate
- State Diploma of Doctor of Pharmacy from University of Paris-Sud (1983)
- Master's research at Physico-chemistry, pharmacotechnics, biopharmacy unit (1986)
- PhD on polymeric nanoparticles for intracellular infections (1990)
Fattal's research pioneers vectorization of nucleic acids for gene regulation, developing lipid nanoparticles to treat rheumatoid arthritis and pulmonary inflammation. His team specializes in pulmonary nanotoxicology, designing biodegradable nanoparticle systems to avoid toxicity while enabling precise drug targeting to immune cells. Collaborations with rheumatologist Xavier Mariette and IHU PROMETHEUS drive innovations in inhaled dexamethasone delivery for acute inflammation.
Honors include the Dr. and Mrs. Henri Labbé Award (2016), Maurice-Marie Janot Prize (2018), and membership in three national academies. His work informs European Commission nanomaterial safety reports and has generated 14 international patent families.
As an educator, Fattal mentors pharmacy students through summer laboratory internships that frequently lead to thesis work. His research bridges public-private funding sources, exemplified by a nuclear decontamination cream developed with IRSN and CEVIDRA. The recent relocation of IGPS to Saclay plateau aims to accelerate translational nanomedicine research toward clinical applications.
