Eleni Epifaniou is the Department Chair and Assistant Professor in Health Psychology at the European University of Cyprus (EUC), Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences. She holds a PhD in Health Psychology from the University of Surrey (2009) and has extensive research expertise in chronic disease management, self-management interventions, and healthcare communication. Her work integrates behavioral science with clinical practice to improve patient outcomes in chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and COPD.
Key roles include leading the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences since 2017 and prior positions at the Open University of Cyprus (Part-time Lecturer, 2016–2019) and City Unity College (Coordinator of Psychology Program, 2015–2017). She has collaborated with institutions like the Cyprus Police Traffic Department to enhance road safety behaviors and Nicosia General Hospital to train healthcare professionals in communication skills.
Her research focuses on synthesizing evidence for self-management strategies, particularly for long-term conditions. Notable projects include NIHR-funded studies on intervention design and collaboration with King’s College Hospital on patient-clinician communication. She has published widely in journals like Journal of Hypertension, BMC Medicine, and PLOS ONE, emphasizing implementation science and patient-centered care.
Professional activities include participation in policy initiatives such as developing reporting standards for implementation studies (StaRI framework) and advising on mental health services in hospitals. Her work bridges academic research with real-world healthcare challenges, prioritizing translational outcomes.
