Prof. Elena Marushiaková is affiliated with the Institute of Ethnology and Social Anthropology at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS) since 2023. Previously, she held roles at the University of St Andrews (UK), including Leverhulme Visiting Professor and Research Professor, where she led the ERC Advanced Grant 2015 project on Roma civic emancipation. She also worked at Leipzig University (Germany) and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
Her research focuses on Roma studies, history, and ethnography, with a regional emphasis on Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. She examines ethnic and national minorities, exploring their socio-cultural dynamics and historical trajectories. Notably, her ERC-funded project investigated Roma civic rights between the World Wars, highlighting marginalized communities' struggles for recognition.
