Elena Hommel is a Researcher at the Department of Cell Toxicology, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) since August 2023. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Chemistry and Conservation Biology from the University of Koblenz-Landau and a Master's degree in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Bayreuth, with an Erasmus exchange at Stockholm University.
Her research focuses on evaluating environmental and human health impacts of chemical mixtures using high-throughput in-vitro bioassays, chemical analytics, and human biomonitoring. Key topics include endocrine disruption, immunomodulation, and the development of exposure biomarkers. She contributes to the ENDOMIX project investigating immune system effects of chemical mixtures.
At the 2025 SETAC Europe conference in Vienna, she presented work on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and chemical exposome assessment with her team. Collaborations include improving in vitro toxicity prediction models for MLinvitroTox, a tool developed at Eawag.
She is currently pursuing her Ph.D., with research involving placenta and blood sample screening for mixture components. No formal advisees or scientific awards are mentioned.
