Elena Gutierrez Farewik is a Professor in the Department of Engineering Mechanics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, affiliated with the Digital Futures research center. She chairs the Working Group 'Rich and Healthy Life' within the Strategic Research Committee and leads multiple projects focusing on exoskeleton control systems, remote rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal modeling. Her research integrates biomechanics, robotics, and data-driven approaches to address mobility challenges in neurological and musculoskeletal disorders.
Key projects include the Deep Camera-Based Movement Analysis system for tele-rehabilitation and real-time exoskeleton optimization. She has pioneered human-in-the-loop optimization strategies for dropfoot gait assistance and developed models to predict neuromuscular adaptations in spinal cord injury patients. Her work spans experimental validation, computational modeling, and clinical translation.
Her academic contributions are reflected in over 50 peer-reviewed articles since 2012, emphasizing gait biomechanics, exoskeleton design, and musculoskeletal dynamics. She actively collaborates with Stockholm University and RISE Research Institutes of Sweden through Digital Futures, focusing on societal challenges like aging populations and neurorehabilitation.
