Dr. Elena Fumagalli is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University's Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development (Energy & Resources department) and holds a part-time professorship at the European University Institute's Florence School of Regulation. Her work focuses on energy transition, including incentive regulation of energy networks, energy markets design, and sustainable energy access. She has consulted for institutions like Italy's ARERA and the Italian Power Exchange, and previously served as an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Milano.
Research Interests: Her research addresses challenges in energy transition, such as regulatory frameworks for renewable integration, energy market design innovations, and equitable energy access in vulnerable regions like refugee settlements. She also explores the interplay between energy systems and socio-economic factors, including food security in humanitarian contexts.
Key Projects: She leads projects like MODES (Marker Organization of the Dutch Energy System) and studies energy access in Sub-Saharan African refugee camps. Recent work includes analyzing offshore wind farm network resilience and light-robust optimization in electricity markets.
Teaching & Leadership: She co-leads the Energy Science program and teaches courses on energy markets and sustainability analysis. She has served on Utrecht's Faculty Council and participated in the Westerdijk Leadership Program.
