Elena Borra is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Parma, where she leads research on cortical and subcortical networks for voluntary motor control in primates. With extensive international collaborations across Europe and Japan, her work integrates anatomical tracing, neuroimaging, and computational approaches to understand brain connectivity.
Her primary research interests focus on:
- Cortical networks for motor control and sensorimotor integration
- Primate neuroanatomy and comparative brain organization
- Structural and functional brain connectivity using tractography
- Subcortical contributions to motor circuitry
Publication analysis reveals consistent themes in neural pathway mapping, with recent emphasis on tractography validation, cortico-basal ganglia circuits, and evolutionary neuroanatomy. Her work demonstrates increasing integration of multimodal techniques including diffusion MRI, neural tracers, and functional connectivity across 15+ publications.
Research funding includes:
- FIL (Local University Research Fund)
- Cariparma Foundation Grant
- PRIN-MIUR 2017 project: Performing Actions in a Changing Environment (PACE)
- FFABR ANVUR basic research funding
Dr. Borra leads the Neuroscience Unit and maintains active collaborations with laboratories at KU Leuven, Boston University, Kyoto University, and Sapienza University of Rome. She organized the international conference "Different elements of primate neural networks in the connectome era" in 2017.
