Specializing in the archaeology of emotion and material culture (c.1200–1700), her work explores how objects like medieval badges, jewelry, and everyday artifacts reflect and shape human emotions. She investigates themes of personal protection, memory, religious practices, and body adornment through interdisciplinary methodologies combining archaeological, documentary, and art historical evidence.
Her recent publications examine medieval rings, drinking vessels, and dress accessories as conduits for emotional expression and social practices. She actively utilizes Portable Antiquities Scheme data to analyze artifact reuse and cultural significance.
At Oxford, Dr Standley teaches courses on later medieval European archaeology, the medieval body and adornment, and archaeological principles. She supervises doctoral research on medieval material culture, emotion archaeology, and artifact studies.
