Dr. Eleanor Ratcliffe is a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Psychology at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the Environmental Psychology Research Group (EPRG) in the School of Psychology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She holds a PhD from Surrey and has conducted postdoctoral research at Tampere University (Finland) and Imperial College London before returning to Surrey in 2019. Her work focuses on restorative environments, sensory experiences (particularly soundscapes), and place attachment's role in wellbeing. She teaches modules like Key Questions in Environmental Psychology and contributes to sustainability-related courses.
Her research explores how natural and urban environments promote psychological restoration, including studies on natural soundscapes, virtual reality nature experiences, and the design of wellbeing-enhancing spaces. She collaborates with organizations like Tranquil City to develop tools for evaluating urban wellbeing interventions. Current supervision includes projects on blue space restoration, virtual reality stress reduction, and sensory garden design.
Recent publications emphasize urban tranquility, modular housing perceptions, and the psychological impacts of domestic environments during lockdowns. She advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to urban planning and environmental design to enhance public health and equity.
